Grouping Notation

In mathematics parentheses are used to group expressions together and change the order of operations. Everything within the parantheses is evaluated, then the rest of the calculation is carried out following the normal order of operations. For example, the two expressions below are similar, but one uses grouping to change the meaning of the expression.

Order of Operations

The order of operations is an agreed-upon standard that describes what operations should be performed first in a math expression.
